Frequently Asked Questions about Expressive Arts Training
and World Arts Organization

What is Expressive Arts Therapy?

Expressive arts is a phenomenological, body-centered, arts-based psychotherapy that employs the creative process to foster greater awareness, and ultimately healing, in individuals and communities. This multi-arts, or intermodal, approach to psychotherapy and counselling uses our inborn desire to create - be it music, theatre, poetry, dance, or other artistic forms - as a therapeutic tool to help initiate change.

What do you mean by intermodal?

One art form can bring what we are “seeing” forward by switching to another art form. In this way, we don’t interpret the work. We go to another mode of expression to continue to access the wisdom found in the first. This can be done several times, harvesting the fruit of what we discover.

Is the program spiritually informed?

Finding the phenomenological language for moving through profound experiences becomes essential to navigate in a clear and grounding way to move through our more subtle realms of awareness. We are spiritual beings have a human experience. Bridging these ways of knowing is essential.

Will this EXA training lead to work?

Expressive arts (EXA) is a growing field. Being a therapist is only one option. EXA can be foundational for work in the coaching and consulting field, in education, in conflict transformation and peace building (global health), as well as work in complimentary approaches to addictions and trauma

Is this a certification program? What are the requirements?

The training can be used for continuing education credits (CEU) or for professional development if you are already working in a related field.

What is the professional organization affiliated with Expressive Arts Therapy?

The International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA). World Arts Organization is also a member of the International Network for Expressive Arts Training.

Can I attend EXA TRAINING part-time?

The World Arts Org program is a part-time program. Almost all of the students are also working in their respective fields. If you are out of town, you can also take the 5-Day Intensives separately. Virtual (Zoom) supervision is available.

What are the requirements for being accepted into the PROGRAM? Do I need to have an arts or COUNSELLING background?

An interest in the interface and interplay of the creative process and healing is all that is necessary. Our motto is low skill/high sensitivity. With a little bit of skill and sensitivity, we can make beauty and make sense. An interview is required, as well as a short written description of your background and why you are interested in this training.
